#AskNostr Has anyone ever tried squid before? If so, is it hard to chew? What's it taste like?

There's this buffet I am going to for my birthday and I've never tried squid in my life that's why I'm asking.

I used to eat squid in Portugal

Was it salt, sweet, or chewy?

Squid can be chewy, but if cooked just right, it can also be tender and juicy

not sure people should be eating squid outside of Portugal and Japan...

Is usual in Portugal as stuffed squids and squid skewers

sounds good 😋

dried squid?

fried squid?

sashimi?

you ever eat the eraser off a pencil?

1. Dried squid.

2. No.

its good

(the squid i mean)

But how exactly does it taste (bitter, sweet, bland, etc.)?

Its kinda fishy and salty

not a real strong taste

more people have problems with the consistency of it

dried is pretty hard to chew. but after you soften it a bit it's kinda rubbery

like an eraser.

Depends how it is prepared, but yeah it can be kinda rubbery and chewy. Pressure cooking it can sometimes get it tender.

In general tho would you say it's more bitter or sweet?

Doesn't have a strong taste in my experience. Not bitter.

So it's pretty much bland?

By itself, yeah I would say so. I tend to like things with strong flavor. A foodie might say it has a "delicate" flavor.

yeah Japanese snack on it with sake exactly because its not a strong taste

Well I'm not a drinker so I guess I'm in for a treat.

I love grilled squid over charcoal

Squid secret cook less than 4 minutes or more than 20 minutes

É um pouco difícil de mastigar, mas também não tão difícil, gosto muito bom, vale muito a pena, frito é uma delícia

Squid is called calamari in the restaurant world. It is prepared differently, so it tastes different. Depending on what the spices are. Calamari is usually served fried with a dipping sauce but they are also used in risotto and stews
