#permies of nostr. I transplanted raspberries to a new area, the bed runs along a concrete pad about 60ft long, but only 1-2 ft wide. My cardboard disintegrated faster than anticipated, I think the grass was smothered anyway, but some may come back. Would broadleaf "rhizome barrier" plants (comfrey, rhubarb, sorrel, horseradish) be beneficial or do you think they will interfere too much with new raspberry canes? Another thought is successive cover crops, probably sweet pea this spring, maybe a summer bean, then oats and diakon this fall to winterkill. Or should I combine methods (rhizome barrier plants+cover crops)? #asknostr #permaculture #foodhedge #grownostr

I have established canes sending up new growth shoots through lawn, 8-12 inches of card/compost/straw.

If this is their first year after transplant, I'd probably not put down too much covercrop, but you should be good after the first season.

The spring and summer plan would be a single row of dwarf sugar snap peas followed by a row of green beans or cowpeas. Do you think that would be too much? I pruned the canes to about 2 ft tall, so they'll have at least some leaves above the annuals

The sugar snaps are fairly dinky right, won't grow too tall so should be fine. Not sure what a 'green bean' is to you, but for us that would mean 'runners' or 'french' and they would grow too vigorously for around the new canes.

Are you growing early or late raspberries?

Ah, yeah, around here everyone grows bush-type green beans, I think some folks call them string beans. They're what I'm planning to use. Seed is cheap, plants are bushy and shade the ground well
