I will always run a Lightning Node. Although, it is losing Sats with random force closes lately by other nodes and high fees. Lightning Nodes are the backbone of Bitcoin LN payments and for Zaps on Nostr. So, if we Plebs don’t run a node, no one else will run it for us. Self sovereignty is key.

I’ve been lucky to not experience any forced closes, why do those occur?

A protection mechanism for channels to not lose funds in case of an issue.

I don’t even know if the btcpay.nostr.build node makes money with its 10+ channels..

If you don’t force close channels, overall you should be OK, right? Can ‘fees’ cost more than to run the channel?

Force Close is a safety mechanism in LN. If something is not right with a HTLC, a node will initiate a FC to protect funds. In a high fees environment that FC will look to settle in next block so you or the other node will incur the closing and sweeping cost. It is a bit complicated topic but part of running a routing node.

So ideally you connect to channels that are reliable

Yes. But, you can still get a FC situation. It is always good to open channels with folks you know to be active and reliable. For various reasons. That is how we started Plebnet. Lightning Node running is a team sport!

If Plebs dont run nodes and keep the network decentralised WOS is paying Acinq who is paying River and so on round in a circle of custodial services no different to interbank settlements just quicker.

Exactly.
