Eleven years ago when you could buy a whole bitcoin for around $600, someone made a video of a purchase using a no-KYC ATM.

Been there several times. The slowdown is the Pi crunching the blocks. Download speed really doesn’t matter that much as compared to the power of the hardware.
how is it going - progress? last 10-15% is the killer - slow with the heavy blocks .
Run a lightning node. Install BOS.
