is mastodon an open protocol?

(no idea, but i assume not)

Mastodon has gatekeepers and isn’t really decentralized.

Server admins have the power.

can one take their mastodon account to another server?

You can export your followers but it’s not the same account.

Also the admin can stop you from doing it.

Yeah, it always seemed like digital feudalism to me over there.

Nostr solves the need for a permanent, non-censorable identity. There are some ways in which Mastodon is better, but they’re not nearly as fundamental as the identity problem.

I found Mastadon to be borderline unusable. Took ages to set up and your content was still at the mercy of the instance host.

I don't think this is a fair criticism. Concerns with censorship, defederation and account deletion are fair but Mastodon and fedi in general have mature apps that are much more usable than nostr's though we are getting slowly closer to that.

Because it's truly open.

Sorry, I mean decentralized.

What's the difference though? Break it down. Why isn't mastodon truly decentralized?
