Yes, we want to effectively sunset it by the Self-Custody Day on January 3, after which incoming limits will be very low.

Details coming this week!

Wait so I won’t be able to self-host anymore ?

No. They are talking about their old custodial wallets. You will still be able to self-host your Alby Hub for free, and connect it with the Alby Browser extension and Alby Go.

Okay thank you because I’m like man I spend so many hours learning and self hosting just to get cut off and having to find another solution.

Oh, I get it! I have been bouncing around to various self-custody solutions for a while. Finally got settled in with Mutiny Wallet, only to have them completely dip out. So frustrating!

But I have always wanted to have my own node be my daily-driver for Lightning, and while it was technically possible with other solutions, they were all more headache than they were worth, in my opinion. Alby Hub, on the other hand, is dead simple to set up.

Now we just need custom lightning addresses that use NWC instead of LNURL and we're really off to the races.

Can you imagine? Set up a NIP-05 with not only your regular relays that you post to for folks to find your notes, but with a relay used to exchange encrypted invoice info with your node and any NIP-05 is suddenly a lightning address using NWC. Why the heck not? nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm can we has pls?

So the monthly fees are not there to turn this into a profitable business but to get rid of existing hosted accounts? Cause that price tag sure is too high for a sustainable business.

Maybe as an incentive to get people to pay high monthly fees, make the max received amount equal to the monthly fee. If people don't want to receive big zaps, let them have a cheap account and those who want to show off as playing in a different league, pay much more than even the 21k?

No ..does that mean my getalby lightning won't work ! ?

Everything in Alby will continue to work, but you will need to spin up your node or use someone's else.

You are prompted about upgrade in Alby Dashboard since July! ;)

Yeah, I just close it out🤣😂

me too :-)

Okay .. looks like I have my weekend planned :-) .. btw thanks for all the work you guys do - love and appreciate !

In case you missed it...

#Alby is set to sunset their free Alby Lightning wallet by Jan 3. Your options at that point will be to self host Alby Hub or pay 21k sats/month for Alby Cloud (currently 50% off the first 3 months). This is big news. Be prepared for the change.

Noooooooo!!!!

It my favorite my mobile wallet 😥

Now it can be truly yours!

Yeah, but I don't keep enough on there to worry about that

the rssblue uses you for payment in their hosting settings, what is the scenario for this after the change?

Alby, our API, Extension, everything works as it used to!

There will be changes to the shared node only.

We have been slowly reducing limits (getalby.com/usage) on these accounts, January 3 being the final date.

It doesn't mean it will not be operational, we're preparing transition to be as smooth as possible 😉

Thanks for the reminder...

Time to migrate away, I guess... Much as I've appreciated and used aspects of Alby, I have misgivings and am feeling increasingly "captured."🧐🤨😳

can you explain "captured" - as we put a lot of work in to put users in control. With the Alby Hub, the work on NWC as a protocol, etc.

feedback is appreciated.

Hi, nostr:nprofile1qqsrxra3gv0lnkxz2pcxh0xuq9k4f9dr7azwq3aypqtnay4w0mjzmtqpzemhxue69uhkummnw3ezu6m0wdkk7uewdaexwqgkwaehxw309aex2mrp0yh8qunfd4skctnwv46qzxnhwden5te0dehhxarj9ehhyctwvajhq6tvdshxgetkvjvusy, and thanks for asking...

Please don't get me wrong; I've used and appreciated your work, and I'm sure it will continue to be of great value to many.🙏🏻😀 I will also probably use it going forward in some well defined, limited fashion.

The things that concern me most are self-sovereignty, privacy, and centralization, and I realize these all exist on a very nuanced spectrum. I tend toward the desire to be at the end of the spectrum that's as isolated from states/governments as possible.

The thread below contains a discussion of some of my concerns:

Thank you and Alby for all the good you do!🙏🏻😀👍💖

Thanks for the feedback and words, I appreciate that a lot!

I am totally with you there and that's also to goal and a reason why we have built Alby Hub.

Check it out on Git Hub. While we try to make things easy you can use it in the level of which you're comfortable with.

In that thread there are a few misconceptions about Alby Hub it seems.

Would be happy to show you more and learn more of what you would like to see or where we can improve.

Did you already try to run it on your own machine? home server or something?

Have not tried it on my Start One...

I would love to hear about the misconceptions in the thread; thank you for reading it and responding.🙏🏻🫂👍😆

Users have for sure the option to run it independently and without sharing data. For example you can easily run it without Alby account and also use the lightning address with limited permissions.

You can also configure your own relay, or block explorer.

We might not have a good overview and guide for that and people might need to find it from the github readme 😉

I might do it and make a mini tutorial, you never know 😂🤣

would be awesome. Let me know when you have questions and feedback.

The configuration should be pretty straight forward actually.

I figured out all of the config, I just hate the Esplora and how messy that thing is. Nip57 in the zapper should be not too hard too, just would want to simplify it a little (a lot) and use SQLite instead of PGSql (even if I have it already in a clustered configuration). Want to probably make address server completely serverless so I don’t have to host yet one more thing myself 🫡

Esplora is a dependency of LDK. I think in the future bitcoin core will also be an option directly.

Regarding the DB: I think best is to use an ORM that abstracts it away and gives again options on how to run it. The queries should be simple and compatible.

Agree, drizzle is good for that. I am also aware about LDK needing esplora at this time, I’ll see if I can make a docker with the minimum possible dependencies and smallest possible footprint, but we’ll still need about 1TB of storage for the full set (bitcoincore + esplora lite)🫡
