They already support it if you run the wallet client behind tor.

Examples:

* alby in the tor browser

* any LN webapp (lnbits, RTL, thunderhub)in the tor browser

I haven't tested it but maybe using android LN apps with Orbot also would allow you to query onion lnaddresses.

That’s a lot of work to make every client do! Big lift leads to low adoption

How about this; no change on clients.

username~address.onion@torproxy.com

Basically torproxy.com resolves address.onion and hits the onion end point returning it's response.

Caveat; centralized tor proxies until clients embed it internally.
