A digital Id card vs a paper one?

A passport is only needed if you travel abroad, we have up to now, wandered the streets without the need to prove our identity on request.
Is that what they're asking for?
When the cops stop you, do they ask for an ID card or driver's licence?
Yes, we have driving licenses, but don’t need to carry or show them.

So if they stop you and ask for your licence and registeration what happens if you don't have it on you?
Do they let you go? Like say a traffic stop
We never have it on us. They write us a ticket and we are supposed to show up at a police station with a few days with our driving license.
Insurance and MOT are verified online.

Like in South Africa, you can't operate any vehicle without having the license on you. If you're stopped and you don't have it, big trouble.
