What do you all think about criminal background checks for work?
My employer is asking for one (he made sure to include that it is not obligatory and I can opt out if I'm uncomfortable with it).

Yep, for sure. I've had them done in the past. I was just curious to get others' opinions on it.
well if you opt out, in a way you raise a flag.
of course if a bunch of guys opt out, then not a problem.
if an employer likes your work, they will keep you around even if you got a bad history.
also some employers are forced to do this background check for external reasons.
I have to have 'controlled goods' which requires background check, and it's the states telling us to do it.
That's what people used to call a "stupidity test"

So tell him no.. its an option right.. tell him do to religion you can't show him your criminal record

He's doing it so we can be certified as a trustworthy electrical company by some central body.
Ya I get it sometimes when they pick up big jobs other companies require every employee be legit.. fuck it if you have nothing to hide.. his probably looking to expand never know..
For sure. We're a small, newish company and he is looking to grow.
He's a close friend of mine and I have no issue doing it.
