We have a challenge for adoption in the terminology we use.

Imagine you’re trying to tip a restaurant server or bartender who has never used bitcoin before.

Do you say:

“Can I tip you in bitcoin?”

“Can I tip you with sats?”

“Can I tip you with Lightning?”

Something else?

If you say “bitcoin” you take the chance of triggering an bias response, such as:

“No thanks, I don’t understand crypto.”

“Didn’t that whole thing just collapse?”

“I’m just getting by, I need real money.”

Etc.

If you don’t say “bitcoin” you then have to explain what sats/satoshis are, what the Lightning network is, why it’s faster than sending on-chain bitcoin. Before you know it, you sound like a crazy person trying to give an speech on economics, technology, and decentralization to someone who absolutely has no time for that.

And if you do succeed in convincing them to download a wallet and receive their first tip, the next question is usually, “How do I cash this out so I can actually use it?”

How do you approach this problem?

Can I tip you in that freedom money sweety? Lol

I say: i WILL tip you in Bitcoin, and set you up a wallet in 8 seconds…

I like the idea of giving out QR codes printed on little sheets of paper. I've included a little tutorial on how to scan the LNURLw QR, what apps to use and what you can do with bitcoin. For example with a another QR code that links to bitrefill to buy Amazon vouchers...

Yeah. Cashapp solves this...

Hey whats your cashapp for a tip?

*send sats

Let them figure the rest out!

Doesn’t Cash App require the user to enable receiving bitcoin first? I don’t think it’s turned on by default.

They can receive, just can't buy or sell it without I think. I can test this with a friend later today.

You sending the sats, is the prompt for them to turn it on? Lol

I’ll look into it. Where I live, nostr:npub1cashappn03s3cl2ljsdntv0v28e2um5lgx4vjctqjt23pcwzjhsqmtdg5l has Lightning disabled, but you can send sats internally between users and use on-chain transactions.

I think you have to say Bitcoin. My approach is always, “Would you consider taking your tip in Bitcoin?” If they say no or are derisive, you just tip in fiat and move on. If they are interested, they will usually start asking questions. At which point, I tell them they shouldn’t accept Bitcoin if they need money today to pay bills. It’s something that should be put away for 5 years or more. This takes care of the conversion issue. Just my personal thoughts and experience.

“Would you consider” is a great opener for this type of conversation - even if they jokingly answer “well I’ve considered it and no thank you” the vibe is still good; and you may have got them thinking 🧡

I always ask if they take ₿itcoin, like it is normal and they are the ones thst are behind the times. Because they are. If they say no, I say, oh that’s too bad. Do you take Apple Pay? Then I keep going down to worse payment methods. Crefit card? Atm? Cuck Coin?

You can try with nostr:npub13qv9uflfdn70c0zcccju7uxymwn407xjax4he2uq75qj5dp7klfqt74rrf you will be giving a QR code with all the necessary info there

And the best part you can receive your sats back if they do nothing with it.

Very good idea!

Which onboarding method do you choose, standard?

The most common is Standard

You can create a 100 sats tip and redeem it yourself with the link to see all the process.

I think that you just have to ask. I have used both on and off ramps and for a first time experience it's important for them to feel that they can “cash out” just need to create touchpoints and hope one time it sinks in

"Can I tip you on this mobile app?

You can use it to do trades with anyone who has this app and similar other apps."

See the number of download on some lightning apps in google play and app store for estimations .

I like this approach. Somewhat similar to how nobody says “can I tip you with digital dollars?”, but rather “can I Venmo you?”

They will know it's real and official when you search "lightning wallet" in google play and show the number of downloads.

Cause it's "official" and everything "official" is legit.

Can't see tenor or giphy 🙁

This is tenor

I see it's tenor link.

I had to add giphy because in past occasions some friends tried to find the meme or gif from the other one and I had to dissapoint them by saying it's not working either.

You mean you can’t see the gif itself?

Seem to recall nostr:npub1cpazafytvafazxkjn43zjfwtfzatfz508r54f6z6a3rf2ws8223qc3xxpk is in Iran and nostr.build wasn’t available..

I believe nostr.build is blocked in China and Iran.

nostr:npub137c5pd8gmhhe0njtsgwjgunc5xjr2vmzvglkgqs5sjeh972gqqxqjak37w found out it's not nostr.build itselfe but the CDN

Ah, that makes more sense.

Ahhh, interesting…

Bunny is blocked in Iran, as many other CDNs. 🐶🐾🫡

🤦‍♂️

This is awkward. What is as mundan as a gif, is such a burden in my world.

This sucks.

And then some!

😄

Now I see the black man tapping his temple.

I couldn't see it just a few minutes ago.

They manipulate our intrenet and play us so frequently until we go mad or give up!

How dare they block Eddie Murphy!

They are bullies, but more violent.

They only obey bigger bullies.

That's the reason Iran's Regime doesn't comply international accords such Copyright or FATF

Yes. And when ppl reply with memes and gifs they expect a reaction but I cannot see or open. So I have to explain why, otherwise they think I'm not friendly or worse.

You can copy text from the note menu and paste elsewhere to see details of any file as it’s always a link.

I see the links. But whichever in filtered and banned cannot render and I can not open it elsewhere either. Youtube, Giphy, Tenor, Twitter, Instagram...

I would see it as: Claim your bounty (tip). If the person is interested and has the time, he/she will find out how to do it.

My BTC aren’t for sharing, but I will sit at his bar and talk BTC the entire time

Try not to think to hard about it. These type of things organically synchronize to common terminology. This type of planning is a waste of your valuable cognitive bandwidth. Besides, plans never survive first contact with the enemy

I don't. I still did not solve the mothership issue.

Do I want to tip in BTC?

Do I want to part with my says? Even if I want to buy them back in an instant. Do I want to pay an extra 2-15%?
