We have an illusion of democracy, and nothing actually close to it.

I wonder if the architects of the first democratic state thought: yeah, everyone will vote! Or if they realized "you know, maybe only a few people will vote"

It's a stupid system, your "representatives" are so far away they are in a totally different world. Votes are not power, lol. The power you would have, your money, was already taken without giving you any say on the matter.

I believe they assumed only a few people would vote on behalf of the citizenry. The mistake was trying to govern too many people over too large an area. It seems that non-digital governance structures naturally lead to power in the hands of a few people, but it only works if those few people oversee themselves and not others. Once a population gets so large as to need representatives, it’s time to reconstruct the whole system.
