I am not familiar with the DOI ... it sounds like a centrally controlled registry which, obviously, we don't have and don't need (I think) - the lightning network already provides the identities and hooks needed. I imagine one prism could send to another prism. The goal is to support a value-for-value economy.

I definitely agree. I needed some kind of analogy to make a connection in my head. DOI is a non-profit non-governmental foundation that issues digital identifiers for any kind of published content. Recently it’s become possible to obtain DOIs for codes and pre-prints to cite them consistently, which in itself is a good thing. The only problem is that you need to use their servers or software to get a DOI and it requires some trust.
I‘ve been for a long time thinking about how the current scientific publishing could be decentralized. I guess I even mentioned some ideas in a nostr nest on how nostr could serve as a self-sustainable network for publishing and citations.
