How important are pet names to you? Is anyone aware of ANY clients using petnames today as a reference implementation?

I'm considering ways to add to Corny Chat using NIP-32 labels, or nostr:npub1gcxzte5zlkncx26j68ez60fzkvtkm9e0vrwdcvsjakxf9mu9qewqlfnj5z NIP-81 Relationship Status (https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/761)

I added and removed from Amethyst so many times. Petnames for me must be private. Most people assume it to be private: like calling a brother "Replaceable Parts", etc. If you use the public version make sure to tell people that it is public.

Agreed on the privacy aspects.

I have a contact list on my phone and for emails and neither are global access.

With something like the Relationship Status, yes. It's a must.

We just need to confirm if that is how we want to do it.
