Node question:

If I have a newish high end computer that I use for computationally heavy work and need to ensure its longevity because I can’t replace it for many years, is it worth running a full node from that machine for like 8 hours a day?

I don’t know that much about how running a node affects the hardware.

I also don’t like leaving it running over night.

Is there any use to adding a node?

Shouldn’t affect the hardware, the resource requirements are fairly minimal. Mostly space for the blockchain and about 1GB RAM.

But IMO it’s probably not worth running a node for only 8hours a day, better to just have a dedicated hardware for the node and run it 24/7 instead.

🙏 thanks!

I like to keep my nodes up 24/7, in which case I would say you are better off having a dedicated low power computer instead. You don't need a lot of resources. These new mini pcs nowadays have plenty of power to run a node, space for two storage devices if you want some redundancy and they are inexpensive.

My suggestion would be for a mid range mini that you can turn into a server which could run nodes and some of your own self hosted software.

thank you!

I just got done with rebuilding my entire setup so happy to help with any questions.

I appreciate that! It will be a little while before I can spend more money on a dedicated setup, but I’m starting a piggy bank for it lol

🙏⚡️

I did this with a monero node for a while and it was only inconvenient if I suddenly wanted to make a tx and it wasnt synced.

it should be the same.

eventually i just put a node on a $300 always-on laptop tho

thanks! after y’all’s feedback I think i’ll look for an affordable dedicated machine.

You definitely want it to always be running, like a wifi router. You can build your own start9 for less, if you can't afford a pre-build.

I’ll look into the start9

thanks!
