Back in January, Twitter blocked content in India at Modi's request. More than just blocking links, certain tweets themselves were blocked:

In March, Twitter blocked a bunch of accounts in India, widening the censorship:

Guardian reported on it last week:

"Twitter agreed to block more than 120 accounts, including the Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh, the Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, several journalists and an Indian MP. Twitter also blocked the handle of the BBC’s Punjabi bureau."

In 2022, Musk said that Tesla looked into opening facilities in India but it as conditional on being able to sell and service cars in India (which makes sense). Given that it's an economically growing country of 1.4 billion people, it's a long-term important market to sell to. India might never be a profit center for Twitter, but it could certainly be a profit center for Tesla.

Yesterday, Elon Musk followed Modi on Twitter.

"Free speech absolutism" goes about as far as business interests do. Any centralized platform is corruptible, controllable.

Tweet voire Icare (type de personnalité dite difficile atteinte d'hubris ...A suivre les prochains mois avec encore des procès relatifs aux licenciements de certains salariés de Twitter depuis l'acquisition de la plateforme grâce à des fonds divers et variés sans trop de vérification. Derrièrement c'est un service juridique qui a dû jeter l'éponge...Personne ne parle de la mise en danger de beaucoup de salariés suite aux Twitter Files, les loyers des bureaux à travers le Monde non payés sans oublier l'exposition à tous les risques psychosociaux de salariés avant et après ...Et vendredi dernier il a réveillé un mouvement de protestations chez tant d'intellectuels de tout domaine qui pourrait le mettre en péril malheureusement ses groupies ignorent les dessous des cartes .🙏pour cette note ici mais Odell a été plus détonant à son encontre sur Twitter 💜

I scrubbed and deleted my twitter account more than two years ago and never looked back.

Elon fixing twitter by increasing fees resembles Powel fixing the dollar by increasing interest rates.

Neither of them have surrendered to the inevitible, nor can they.

The best they can do is attempt a safe landing after having run out of fuel.

To add more context, few years ago Indian government amended its IT laws, allowing them to take down any social media account or post without providing a reason.

All social media companies must comply with these regulations, or they risk losing their privileges, similar to those granted under Section 230 in the US.

Old Twitter resisted and even went to the Indian supreme court but it didn't work.

In short, no company or platform can restore free speech. I think nostr is the perfect answer.

Business is business, if you separate Twitter and Tesla rationally. Neither Musk nor jack nor anyone else can change the government's control over the media. Twitter is not an indestructible weapon. It cannot go over the head of the Indian government and serve the Indian people. When a company has the number of users of a country, it is no longer a personal enterprise, but a national infrastructure. Public opinion is the country's weapon, the government will not give the weapon to others to control.

Twitter even restricted reach of India’s main opposition leader before Elon bought it.

Democracies across world are being controlled by these corruptible platforms (Twitter,Facebook, YouTube..and worse of all whatsapp)
