I’m not thrilled about the new changes to the bluesky terms of service:

This is happening because bluesky is actually still a centralized service with a single set of cryptographic keys for signing of everything, a single server that hosts content, and a single organization creating the technology.

Yup it's a fail sorry to all who worked on it

agree

Do you understand what are the actual plans of making it "decentralized"? I have a hard time understanding how they may keep the current app functionalities if each user is in a different server.

Was tryna figure it out today actually

I think the policies around using the bluesky name without permission are fine. I think the policies that let them remove user content without cause from their servers are fine. If bluesky were running as an open network, as they say they want, where you have multiple PDSs (Personal Data Servers), like relays, then deleting that data is fine.

The problem is that bluesky actually holds all of your keys and there is no path to migrate or interoperate with other PDSs.

It’s fine if they want to enforce rules on the servers they run, but the reason we’re building open protocols and networks is that users have agency and autonomy. Users can leave and switch to other servers with different rules if they want to.

When did this change?

Apparently it’s part of the new bluesky web client which just launched. I think there is a tricky distinction that needs to be made between the stuff bluesky hosts, their web app, and the protocol and PDSs.

It’s fine to have policies about your app, and your PDS (relays in nostr parlance), but not ok when those are run for the protocol. The TOS we’re linking to is for the web app, but it’s not going to be clear to users.

I don't know what's up with lawyers in tech lately... we had Rust Foundation going bonkers, now this. I get that legal system is broken, but open with overzealous clauses and you're damaging product beyond repair even before it's out of the door.

Plus, it's clear information warfare, that lady starting a thread is a lawyer as well:

Do you know how to get invite code for bluesky

Ouch

I thought they said federation would be rolling out soon? And isn’t one of the key features that it’s decentralized protocol instead of a centralized platform?

This thread is good, yes there are problems, but it’s also blown a bit out of scale and taken out of context and can be fixed.

Not all of this is bad. Honestly, I fear this protocol is just an Ukrainian POW getting his head chopped off going viral on it to become unpalatable for most people.

The Wild West of decentralized, impossible-to-stop censorship is an invitation for illegal activity and bad actors. I watched the Daniel Pearl video at the time social media was still young and we didn’t know any better, and I think a kid or a sensitive person shouldn’t be exposed to that, at least not with ease.
