Search hashtags. No algorithms here! You gotta put in the work!
Hey Amy. Nostr is a bit rough around the edges and not all Nostr apps are the same. Decentralization is hard! Some are better at finding people and content than others. If the app that you're using isn't the best at finding people, then it's up to you to do the work and be social. You can search hashtags and keywords. You can comment on other people's notes and let them know that you're here. I think you're using Damus, right? It's a great app but I'll say that Primal does a slightly better job at user and content discovery with different feeds. You can take your secret or private key from Damus and enter it into Primal and give it a try. Nostr let's you take "your account" and login to many different Nostr apps to see what others have to offer.

Welcome! As someone else said, hashtags are a good start, things like #art #photography #foodstr - whatever your interests are. When you find someone whose notes you like, check out who they follow and who follows them.
I used the global feed to find interesting people who are active.
Check following list of npubs with similar interests, you can follow hashtags too

I use Primal and wander around Nostr somewhat randomly. Iβve gradually begun following interesting people and also being followed by a few. What I see now when I open Primal is more interesting than it was a few months ago when I started.
Follow people your friends follow, and then remove some later. No algorithm takes some getting used to but it's worth it.
Different apps have their different search engines. You can search by hashtags, people nicknames, or keywords.. primal has a powerful option to do that by clicking on exploreβ¦

The easiest way is by searching hashtags tags of topics that interest you, and if you want a good starting place #grownostr is a good start for non-btc related content
Nostr is freedom tech, can't be banned and you control your data. You take ownership of your data and who and what you follow. Search around via hashtags, find interesting people and follow who they follow. You'll soon build a healthy follow list. And when you get the chance set up a lightning wallet to zap (you can receive and send small units of Bitcoin), some clients that make this easy are Primal and Yakihone. hashtag searching is probably the best way.

there's is currently 3 ways that i use to find people
1( i look around in global and try to find people who posts that are of interest to me)
2( i go into the perfil of a person that i follow and see what people that person follows)
3( sometimes re-posts from people that i follow of people that i don't follow appear on my feed if i find them of interest enough i follow those people)
