What criteria and metrics do you look for in a used car? Why?

- No older than x year

- No more than x kilometers, etc

Maintenance record. How close mileage is to factory warranty. Always seems like stuff starts to break the closer you are to the end of warranty.

Thank you

Isn't there a calculus for this stuff? That is - the price of a used car drops drastically after x years, but risk of failure grows. A sweet spot of sorts?

Broadly? I highly doubt it

A “sweet spot” I’ve heard of in USA markets is buying used models directly after people return them to dealerships from lease periods. There is a higher likelihood the lessee completed routine/preventative maintenance requirements at OEM approved repair shops or at the dealership service department itself

-OEM reliability reputation

-OEM resale value reputation

-Accessible maintenance records

-Consumer Reports or other component failure data aggregation results

-Buy a pre-purchase inspection service from a mechanic/auto garage if significant maintenance history is unavailable
