If not only in Japan, then I don’t know where else you can leave your bike unlocked an unattended on the public sidewalk. It’s like this all over Tokyo. You wouldn’t want to try that in San Francisco or Portland.

Thanks to diversity, bikes are not safe in America
I have no idea what that means. Do white people not steal bikes in America?
Blacks do over 50% of the crime in America despite being only 14% of the population
Doesn’t prove your point about why bikes are stolen. Seems statistically as likely that a white person might be responsible for a bike being stolen as any other group. So, I’ll lock my bike up in America regardless of the neighborhood demographics.
Also think about it, if you get rid of blacks the statically over 50% of crime disappears and far-less bikes are stolen
Blacks invading Europe for the past decade resulted in high-crime and rapes
The Japanese have a strict social structure and culture of respect. We're the sloppy descendents of religious lunatics, and it shows.
Wow I never knew that! And they don't even have locks 👀
Apparently, there are shops in Japan with no one serving. You go in, pick up what you want, pay for it and then leave. Such a high-trust society.
Isn’t this normal in most of the world?
Certainly every place I have ever lived.
It’s only big cities where people live on the streets that have huge crime problems.
Most towns have less than 1 criminal.
I don’t know what city you live in but it that is statistically not true. If it were then the average town shouldn’t have more than one cop and no jail or criminal courts.
It is true, as most of the world is not cities.
Where I live we do have less than 1 cop. What would they do?
I would say that is an anecdote.
Is that because you do not know the data?
In the UK there are 69 cities.
There are 45,000 towns and villages.
There are 2,080 police stations.
Which means at least 95% of places do not have any cops.
Next time you’re on holiday in the US rent a bike in some town and leave it unattended and unlocked for a few days. Prove your theory.
America is 4% of the world.
It also has the highest incarceration rate on Earth. Most of the world is not like that.
That’s my point.
Was that your point? If so, I do agree. It’s an insane incarceration rate, and yet crime in America is not exclusive to big cities.
I think America has normalised crime to some extent.
I think it partly stems from the prohibition era, when crime was glamorised and seems to have remained so within many American subcultures.
I think scarcity creates criminals. Extreme scarcity creates violent criminals. There are exceptions, but generally take our food away and we get motivated to get food, even at the personal cost of committing violence against another person. This is true of all animals.
I've decided to move out of the USA 'cause I don't see life getting better here. Sad!
