Yes it is, using paid relays doesn't make any practical sense
They will say paid relays filter spam and ads.... What ads if you are using damus or amethyst or snort of iris? None, and regarding the spam, it is mainly for the global view and choosing the right public relays is enough....
Last but not least most users that use paid relays do not understand that by using a pay relay that filters the messages they are losiing the real experience of uncensored messaging, if they want a filtered censored messaging app, what for they want NOSTR, better to use twitter or FB...
Install your own relay, many are doing it already using Umbrel

I hear you, I'm currently running my own private relay as a backup, but that's just one part of it.
Using a paid relay does make sense, it can help you reach more people and discover more people as well. Nostr.wine also channels your content to other countries and popular relays, so that's an additional perk.
You can always turn the public and private relays on and off, so isn't like you will lose your freedom on this :)
I found you on public relays , will never ever use a paid relay, obviously since I like my data uncensored
You don't have control over a company policies to censor (filter) what they believe is spam or not, what is next? Filter of disinformation too....
NOSTR idea is to be uncensorable, a beacon and a flag of freedom of speech, using paid relays in my opinion is ironic and defies the reason most of us are here.
Soon you will be able to add filters to your own relay , APIs will be created, already some in the works, I will be surprised if Amethyst does not add it to their app soon after, filter lists maintained by the community as we do with PiHole most probably will be the norm, if not, this will not progress , it will be nothing but more of the same non sense corporate controlled social network
ive installed my own relay using #MyNode but cant connect to it for some reason. maybe because its behind tor?
Correct, unless you use a dedicated IP address and do port forward in the router to yourr node you won't be able on remote. Maybe in the future we will have a clinwt with TOR capability, thus, we can use the relay as intended
Locally you are able, if you login to your relay from localhoat (using your local IP) , you will get the relay address with the port to add in Amethyst or damus . obviously it will work only on your WiFi, while remote it won't
And forgot to mention, if you are using Amethyst, just turn off the globe in the relay from damus, simple setup and your spam, if any, is prettyy much gone
Free relays have too much spam to discover human generated content.
