Yeah, I'm very curious to see how it is implemented and enforced if/when it passes.
#Signal said they'd pull out of anywhere that passes a law like this. But even with just this one example where a single company is doing the #development and running the centralized server, it's unclear what that would look like.
Sure, tell Apple & Google to disallow IP addresses in #EU from downloading the app.
Will Signal also feel compelled to block IPs from the EU from accessing their servers? Will they be required to block all VPN users, worldwide as well since there's some possibility the end user might be in the EU?
Will #Microsoft #GitHub ban people in the EU from seeing the source code or downloading releases of every app that has #e2ee and no content scanning code?
What does this mean for #Nostr #software, which has e2ee DMs? For relays inside or outside the EU?
And to be clear, I'm asking how it would work for people who want to attempt to comply with the #law. The answers are easy for those people taking the civil disobedience route.
I am also not asking whether people should comply with the law. We all have our own opinions on that and that's fine. I simply want to understand who would be legally required to make what changes.
My take on it (I'm not a lawyer) is that by 'pulling out' they mean they are not operating there, don't have any revenue there, don't have a business presence there, etc.. it does not mean they would block those IPs they simply will not 'operate' there. What IP users in the EU decide to connect to is up to the user, their ISP, their gov's great firewall, etc. App stores may also take the app down in that jurisdiction because the app stores *do operate there and have no interest in loosing that revenue and will comply.
yeah, it will mean that if the service has KYC they will refuse to serve EU unless they are prepared for the compliance costs
as for EU chasing relays, catch me if you can lol
i'll just get a VPS in kazakhstan or mongolia or something and tunnel that to where i actually run it from
plus, the EU can't stop europeans accessing IP addresses outside of their juris my diction anyway, so, just host/inbound it from elsewhere, they are only cutting off their nose to spite their face
also, good luck to the EU telling the entire balkans region to comply, that's just not gonna happen, already isn't happening and they are on the brink of having a fully rabid anti-EU movement in the whole region, nobody there i have talked to is happy about what "partial" membership has cost them let alone full schengen
i mean, bulgaria is famously the least compliant during the pandemic as to jabs per capita

That's a good point. Since Signal forces everyone to disclose their phone number (which is basically KYC light), that means they may cut off all EU phone numbers. ☹️
