Final ruling in Epic v. Google, ordering Google to effectively open up the Google Play app store to competition, is some awesome news.

Google will have to distribute rival third-party app stores within Google Play, and it must give rival third-party app stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps, unless developers opt out individually.

It also forbids Google from requiring the use of Google Pay on apps shipped through their store, freeing devs to offer other payment APIs to go around the 30% fees from Google.

This is a separate judgement from the DOJ vs Google that is considering a breakup of Google, forcing it to sell Android, Chrome and some other units.

I’m all for it. They’re not who they used to be 😔

Wait, freedom fighters are winning this time? 😅

I dislike Google but think they should be free to ship shitty software as are people to not buy it.

they're still free to ship shit software. The ruling is about forcing them to ship non-shit software as well.

its Google's walled garden OS.

Wait so is this a case where I can say "Epic win!" and not sound cringe 😂

Should apply to Apple too

It should but I doubt it will. Apple will put up a much bigger fight because the Apple Store is more fundamental to Apple's survival than the Play store is to Google.

Apple is already under pressure to do the same from DMA enforcement in the EU. With both US and EU regulators pushing to de-monopolise digital tech markets, we've got a good chance of seeing it continue to happen over the next 4-10 years.

This is one example of why it's very important that US citizens re-elect their current administration. Regardless of what they think about the spokesmodel they're running for President.

If the US executive is taken over by the GoP in its current form, it will start working with the digital monopolists. To block antitrust enforcement at home, and fight the EU on DMA enforcement. As well as other countries trying to reign in the unbridled power of the monopolists.

This could set us back a decade or two in the fight for a free and uncapturable internet.

Competition for the win.

YESS!!

Good: Play store unbound by Google, Aurora store

Better: F Droid

Best: Obtainium, getting updates directly from devs

It looks like google has other tricky ways to try and force play store usage and stop users from using things like nostr:nprofile1qqs9g69ua6m5ec6ukstnmnyewj7a4j0gjjn5hu75f7w23d64gczunmgpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43qzxthwden5te0wfjkccte9eeks6t5vehhycm99ehkuegprpmhxue69uhkummnw3ezucm0d9hxvatwvshxzursz8gjrz

Last I heard they're not letting operating systems that are even more secure than default android have the 'certification' needed to run certain apps like banking apps and other secure apps.

I am sure they are going to build whatever text wall they can. But this is a win regardless

It's only a matter of time before Google is forced to open up their SafetyNet attestation to alternate OS like Graphene.

Oh yes please.

was this ever actually a problem? devices with Google play aren't Apple, you could always download 3rd party software.

the real world equivalent to this is like forcing McDonald's to sell whoppers because some people don't want to drive a little further to go to BK.
