You will not get a lot of positive answers from the nostr folks about telegram. People here are biased more towards secure and privacy respecting software.

Signal is well a developed product. Can easily be used by non technical ppl.

SimpleX is interesting, but in its early days. It will take time to reach good quality.

Telegram, WhatsApp, even matrix, or xmpp/jabber are not exciting and maybe harmful.

Discussion

Most bitcoin communities and projects have very active telegram groups.

I also prefer more private and decentralized solutions but at the same time I'm pragmatic and use what works in the most privacy preserving way (FOSS client, orbot proxied, sms4sats burner phone).

Most simpleX / matrix groups are dead in comparison. Ignoring a discussion about FOSS tg clients does not seem that productive to me.

Early nostr development even started as a Telegram group that is still very active.

I've read over at #RoboSats that #Telegram is used to communicate between buyers & sellers? Can FOSS version of #Telegram be used there?

Not quite. Comms between trade peers only occur e2e encryted over tor on robosats itself.

What robosats allows is notifications using a telegram bot so that you don't need to stay by the tor browser waiting for something to change.

E.g. you get the robosats telegram bot warns you if your trade peer DM'd you but does not tell you the content.

What's up with Matrix? Decentralized prodotol, bridges, fully FOSS, what's wrong?

It's a super subjective opinion, feel free to ignore... I just find Matrix, or generally federated messaging, boring. Basically better email. Boring is not necessarily bad, it's even good if works well and is used by many. I've read that matrix has good design. But I don't see it as anything special. In the 2000 xmpp was doing similar things. I understand that matrix is more modern, but I'm just not excited about it... I would be happy if it were new WhatsApp, but it's not happening....

Fair enough, I can understand that. What gets me excited is thw new client based on the new sliding sync protocol (thousand times faster loads) and their work on p2p. Being connected to no seerver at all when you don't need one is amazing.
