2/10 Leaving is hard

People are so into social media these days that the main part of their lives takes place online. Which also means they are strongly emotional attached to their chosen platforms. Leaving one of these platforms means leaving your audience, friends, memories, groups, information streams, posts, chats and much more behind. Things that took years to build. So, leaving a platform needs careful consideration and is a big step for the individual. And exactly this mechanism makes it super hard for people to switch their social networks. Only solution is to use more then one of them:

3/10 You cannot maintain endless social media profiles

So if you can’t make yourself leaving one platform for using another, you could consider using more than one. What might make sense from a logical viewpoint becomes more and more unpractical, especially because of the growing need to compete with the algorithms that start punishing you as soon as you stop posting regularly. Considering that a moderate use of social media is already pretty time consuming, using multiple platforms comes with shortfalls. And shortfalls for users mean problems for emerging platforms:

4/10 Crossing the chasm was only possible, if the platform has something new to it (like Tik Tok)

Because of the problems of leaving a platform or maintaining multiple platforms, in combination with their perceived benefits due to endless content and personal connections, choosing a new platform becomes really unattractive. As long as its not going viral (like tik tok did), their chances to really take off are very small. Plus: reasonable unique selling points don’t matter much, because:

5/10 Most people are lazy and still blue pilled

Even if there are alternatives emerging, many people don’t feel the need to profit from the added value of these new platforms. I am talking specifically about platforms that promote censorship free experiences and information without manipulation or so called „fact checking“. Most people don’t realize that this is a huge benefit and of those who do, only few will make a move. As the saying goes: „You can guide a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.“ So, why is it different with nostr?

6/10 How nostr will cross the chasm

Basically it is because nostr is overrun by bitcoiners who are sexy and know that.

Ok, jokes aside - Nostr comes with two features that will mainly facilitate its run to the top.

First: It erases the pains of leaving a platform or using multiple platforms. So it makes it way easier to move to nostr since you can be assured that everything you build on there will stay and be flexible enough to move with you, if you decide to use another or multiple clients.

Second and more important: nostr is where the monetization will be. Zapping is such a powerful feature with a scope that we probably cant imagine at the moment. But even without knowing where zapping will take us to, we can anticipate its role in crossing the chasm: giving content creators (important: also small and mid sized creators!) the ability to monetize their content directly with their users. And as soon as content creators with big followings join, they will bring their audiences with them. This is when the hot phase starts and adoption speeds up.

7/10 What the adoption will look like

It will get messy, it will get wild but it will be beautiful. It also will take some time, since tbh, using nostr is not that easy for our lazy blue pilled friends at the moment. But as time goes by, it will become a lot easier and people will flood in with increasing speed. This will kick off a loop that forces traditional social media and new competitors to build easy-to-use and beautiful clients. This is when things start to explode.

8/10 What will the end result look like?

In my opinion, the landscape will change drastically. We will leave the current situation of only a few social media platforms running the show to everything concentrating on one social media platform with different access points - the clients of nostr. And what started as the dream of freedom loving bitcoiners will present itself as a dream for every social media user. How long this will take is hard to predict, but I don’t see why it should not happen.

9/10 Impacts on Bitcoin

As we all know, Bitcoins killer app is being perfect money. But besides that, the establishing of a better and more powerful social network hits people exactly where they are willing to change for their own benefits. So we could call nostr the killer app for Bitcoin in a certain way. You just can’t get nostrs benefits without getting orange pilled on the way.

10/10 V4V is great

I hope you enjoyed this „thread“ and I would happily discuss it with you. If you found value in .. ah fuck it, you already know.

Its zap o clock.⚡️

Additionaly, in Nostr you do not need to make your audience engaged in unpacking a 🧵

1. No algorithm that rewards certain parameters.

2. No limitations on note length.

3. No Ads to interrupt content.

Don't get me wrong, I liked your content, but I never liked threads🧵

I am just happy, that it's not required in Nostr anymore. Even to communicate longer topics.

What do you think, any reason why a 🧵 would still offer benefits for someone on Nostr?

I appreciate your point and I think that both types have certain benefits and shortfalls.

I chose to use a thread on this mainly because of:

A) clean structure that helps discussing single headlines/statements

B) Make it possible to repost certain headlines to put emphasis on a single statement

C) Give an easy and encouraging entry by not displaying a 5-10 min reading time text

I guess that in the end it’s a trial and error thing until the best solution is found. What do you think?
