Good morning Nostr 🌞

I've figured out a way to search for YouTube videos prior to 2021, which is great because it's so depressing how it's almost entirely AI slop now.

I used to get a lot of comfort out of watching people talk philosophy during coffee, it creates like a parasocial relationship. Not great, but better than nothing. AI makes it feel even more lonely to be alone. And it creates awful, shallow, trite versions of the deep discussions I crave.

I am really hating the sponsors still. I pay for premium to avoid ads, but when did content creators start heavily including ads in the content to bombard premium users with ads still?

Is Nostr working on a client that will bring back the "You" in "YouTube"? It feels more like AITube now and I hate it.

GM and agreed YouTube sucks now

It's like AI has taken all the cool ways the internet helped us build connections and replaced it with chat bot drivel 😭

We have to solve the storage problem first.

I don't even know what that means 😭

When I posted a longer video I used internet archive to store it (sorry I've since taken it down because a lot of people commented that the only thing I added to the discussion was cleavage and that felt shitty).

The storage problem in a nutshell:

Who maintains all the content?

Where is the content stored?

Who pays for the storage?

Who owns the content?

All of these things are handled by YouTube, since it’s a company with massive server farms and advertising revenue.

Take that away and try to build a decentralized version of YouTube, and it becomes a much harder problem to solve.

If we take responsibility for storing and owning our own content, and maintaining it and paying for it etc. Then couldn't we come up with some sort of decentralized hub here? Like a place where we can offer our content and search for others folks content. I don't know that we need a centralized gatekeeper necessarily?

🤔 I don't actually know how to do anything like this though so take my musings with a grain of salt 😅

It’s been discussed. This is not remotely the first time. I just don’t know who is seriously working on it.

Also, cleavage is good and anyone who disagrees can GFY.

Thanks hon, I'll put the boobylicious Becker video back up once I get a job and don't have to worry about being ridiculed professionally 🫂

FOMO intensifies… 🫨

Don't worry you can still read the essay! 🤣

I have a good imagination.

This is why I think/hope a lot of media hosting on nostr ends up being p2p

Pears.com seems promising, although Im uncomfortable with how much funding they get from Tether. But its open source

I will check it out, thank you!

op_return? lol jk

This is almost equivalent to invoking the red circle 😨

There's still a bunch of both old and new philosophical content available on YT... Academy of Ideas, Michael Sugrue, Gregory B. Sadler, John Vervaeke to name a few channels.

As for ads (from the YT side), you can use Brave browser and skip feeding Google 😉 Ads from the content creators themselves probably won't stop unless/until #V4V gets big enough.

I love Michael Sugrue and will absolutely check out the others you list!

The ads aren't a problem for me from YT side, but rather that more recent content creators will pause and go off about their favorite shampoo which is an ad but isn't blocked the way YT side ads are blocked for me already.

It's more recent content that does it though, again solved by just watching Michael Sugrue content 😅 I feel like increasingly the media I consume is just like, 30 years old. It's just better.

So two alternatives, I've seen some Fediverse people use Odysee, which has some kind of build-in crypto monetization scheme (not BTC)... And then, on the other side of the political divide is Rumble, which is supposedly also thinking about implementing Zaps or something like that.

YouTube alternatives are still a tough thing to provide in a good decentralized way, because of storage and bandwidth needs.
