Maybe Luma is better, but if you have to pay you have to insert a credit card or Apple Pay, Google Pay etc...
Luma is what meetup should be but there are strict limits that prevent you from scaling. Check out Evento

Meetup was sold to We Work a few years ago and then sold on to some private equity company. It’s not the same meetup of years gone by. nostr:npub1eejna2znm5vjf7lu5zwas6jnm0wlqw3psh89yxusdkeldq9kd7ns2npt3l actually tried to start a decentralized competitor to meetup before she founded Bluesky.
The meetup organizer has always had to give them a CC in order to pay the monthly fee.

I used it circa 2012. It was pretty nice and wholesome back then. What you just described sounds dystopian.
Plektos.app and NostrCal.com don't ask you for KYC information just to attend or schedule a fucking meeting.
I used it a couple times years ago and it was cancer. I'm shocked it's even still around.
Meetup wouldn't let me sign up with a protonmail account. I ignored them after.
So when we've debanked ourselves we can't attend any of these events anyway, lol. It's the fiat Internet that is dying 😊.
