I need a new router at home. I want WiFi 6 and I want to install something like OpenWRT or similar software/firmware. What devices/setup should I go for? #askNostr #homenetworking

Turris omnia

This is really cool but way to long into the future for my needs. I have a high time preference on the router purchase πŸ˜‚

Ooh this is sexy, has support for OpenWRT too πŸ‘€ Do you have one yourself?

I use a cheap tp-link that does not have Wifi6 and is more basic but it works for me.

recommended that one because I have read good reviews of it, check the following thread πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Thanks, appreciate it!

Turris Omnia is good but for the WiFi6 you need the latest version that is expensive. I got the 2nd version, WiFi 5 I guess, for 40$ second hand. Totally worth it.

The Turris Omnia doesn't seem to have a very performant CPU (low clocked and dual cores). That said, I'm no expert on router performance so might work fine. What's your experience with the 2nd version with WiFi 5?

I’m eyeing this one https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-ge800/v1/

2 10gbit ports - 1 wan, the other to my desktop 😎

holy shit, that's a powerful space ship! 2x10Gbps LAN ports would be amazing for transferring files to the media server, my god... I absolutely hate the device design though πŸ˜‚ No support for OpenWRT though...

Got a few of these very cheaply, for setting up a mesh:

Cool device but doesn't seem to be powerful enough for me. Slow CPU, low amount of ram and no Wifi 6 support.

It's limited, and probably a bit too slow for filtering/firewalling >=1Gbit speeds, but it's interesting for it's price.

It is wifi6 though.

Pfsense on DIY HW or Netgate router. Together with some APs

DIY hardware… what specs would you recommend?

A processor over 3ghz, (2+ cores) and 8gb of memory is more than enough even with gigabit and site-site vpn, including some addons and even packet inspection if you wanted. (I've run similar setups but now run completely virtual)

Spend the cash on good network cards, with good drivers and offloading features. Server grade Intel or Broadcom nics are recommended. I've had good luck with Intel x540 for 10g or i350 for gigabit.

You can find most of those cards pretty cheap on ebay. I'd fart around in the homelabs reddit if you have a network card you like but don't know if it's good.

necroposting, but maybe GL.iNet ... just be warned, not all of their devices run vanilla OpenWRT equally well

I've currently just set it up with their pre-installed OpenWRT fork
