Think of paid relays as a low-cost ($0.25-$5) alternative to hosting your own. Read access is open to all and paying just allows your notes to be part of the “non-spam” stream the clients are beginning to show.
Paying supports the decentralised infrastructure that makes nostr work and puts your time and attention behind bitcoin away from spammers.
If it’s free, you are the yield.
I think it's important to realise that there will always be free relays. You'll never get locked into a paid only nostr environment.
My relay is there to give a little something back to the community. There's a small 8888 sat charge but you won't see any spam on it, simply because spammers won't pay if there is a free relay they can spam instead.
Additionally, the paid relays I've used aren't swamped with users so as a result, they are quick.
