Weinstein’s ice-cold question: When producing and protecting actual children is no longer the central organizing principle of adult life… and when creating wealth is no longer required for status, security, or attracting a mate…What is left to give a human life direction, meaning, and structure?

Are we about to become a species that invents bigger and bigger dragons to slay just to feel alive? Or do we drift into total listlessness?

Bret’s argument rests on a bad assumption. He treats sex and money as if they were the core meaning or structure of human life, and that removing their “cost” somehow leaves us empty.

But that’s like saying our lives lost direction when we stopped washing dishes by hand, or when we stopped making our own clothes, or when we no longer had to farm just to survive. Those things were never our purpose they were chores that consumed our time. The moment technology freed us from them, we didn’t collapse; we simply had more time to do things we actually cared about.

Same here. Money and sex were never the meaning of life they were pressures that forced us to spend huge parts of our day just staying afloat. For the first time, we’re slowly removing those pressures. That doesn’t make us directionless; it gives us space to explore who we really are and what we actually want to do.

When people finally have time and resources, they think about inequality, they question the status quo, they demand things they didn’t have the bandwidth to demand before. It’s no coincidence students have always been behind major social movements they were the ones with both intelligence and spare time.

We aren’t becoming emptier. We’re just no longer stuck in survival mode. We’re finally able to grow in ways that aren’t purely material emotionally, socially, intellectually. We’re not losing ourselves. We’re actually starting to discover ourselves.

Yes, and those at the top of the pyramid have studied history and those social movements (assuming they didn't actively shape them...). Since nobody likes losing power, they will find ways to keep the people distracted and powerless. We can see the vast explosion of sports and games in the 20th century as one way they slowed down or stopped many of the advances made by organised labour and improved standards of living. Occupy Wall Street earlier this century was a sign the population was getting ready to attack the institutions and systems that ruled over us and it isn't much of a surprise that multinational companies really started to push DEI and the whole trans agenda shortly afterwards... Bread and Circuses is a powerful strategy for a while but never forget that those in power have the weapons to distract us in other ways...

He's missing the point most women feel uncomfortable in their circumstances monetarily.

Birth rates are linked to inflation, people want to have children except they feel it would not be an option. Then adopt convenient narratives to justify the lifestyle they have.

This is similar to other justification trends such as vegetarianism when beef prices are rising. Or stay home vacations as travel becomes too expensive. Always a push and a pull thing. (The narratives can easily be manipulated by those with power as long as they reinforce the underlying trend.)

Even though there are many factors at play if you break it all down i would say inflation would account for more then 80% of mix.

On average we cannot simply ignore millions of years of evolutionary momentum by choice. If we see declining birth rates it shows there is an issue affecting the language evolution speaks. Safety...We do not want to reproduce in unfavorable conditions. All life does this, nesting or migration... We are complicated which just means we add extra steps.

At this point his argument could come into play. Except it is ridiculous to think this is based on sexual freedom (another justification narrative). More likely, inflation induced sexual capitulation.

Multiple factors coming together to justify not being able to afford children or build a safe environment to have children.

Could be a fun idea to play with... The global feminine mind is trying to correct the devastating pressures of inflationary money, the only way it knows how to because the global masculine has failed to do so. We can see on all fronts the global masculine has been under attack for years.

Just dislike all forms of coercive governance religious or not.

That is an interesting way of looking at it. I suspect there is more to the falling birth rate than just that though. One factor is that women prefer (on average!) to date and marry higher status or wealthy men. Since the work place is increasingly pushing women into higher positions and salary with the results that there are fewer men of a higher status or wealth above them, we are getting a situation where an increasing number of women are finding that the suitable dating pool is getting much smaller. I am not making a judgement call on this, just commenting that sometimes you can't have it all!

I completely agree but is this not a symptom of inflation.

Women say they want to work but the truth is they have to work, and again they adopt convenient narratives to justify this. feminism independence and so on. At the same time there are many reasons that men have fallen behind, like i mentioned the attacks on positive masculinity but probably many more.

I don't know this to be true but i would assume in the past it was the masculine force that would typically implement solutions for these large scale attacks on property rights/individual and it was always the individual that discovers them.

We can see this effect if true even here, in btc and on nostr.

Nothing is is set in stone and the outliers are critical to our success.

Hunger used to be around the corner all the time. That’s exactly the point. For most of human history survival was so hard that people barely had the chance to think about anything else.

But when survival stops being a daily emergency, humans don’t suddenly lose purpose they finally get the room to build one. The fact that people can think about meaning, fairness, or long-term goals today is possible because hunger isn’t breathing down their necks.

If your purpose collapses the moment basic needs are met, that wasn’t a purpose it was survival instinct. Human beings are capable of much more than that once they’re not constantly fighting for food or rent.

It’s not that we’re making up problems it’s that, for the first time in human history, most of us aren’t living on the edge of hunger every single day. That gives us room to finally address issues that were ignored because people were too busy just trying to survive.

In my great-grandfather’s time, it was considered completely normal for women to be beaten, kicked out of the house, or made to sleep in the barn, and nobody reacted because basic survival took priority.

Today we actually can stop and ask: “Is this right? Is this moral? What should we change?”

We’re not inventing problems we’re finally able to deal with the smaller ones that were always there.

And that is not loosing "core meaning" or "structure" of life (to get back to original post any my replay to it) it's finally discovering them. It's step forward not step backward.

Yes i watch movies, read books and do a lot of stuff even my father could not do as he could not afford the time to do it. I even 3D print stuff and paint it without even thinking of selling them for profit all thanks to advancements in technology. I have enough time to think about stuff my parents couldn't etc. That's the point or original claim.
