Just because someone spent the time to do an entry level graphic design study to explore 35 different symbols to represent sats 5 years ago doesn’t mean we have to give it any consideration.

We already have a symbol for sats. It’s ⚡️ or nothing.

I also like the lightning bolt. But it's all up for grabs. Square terminals use ₿. Here in Nostr, Chachi, Chorus and a few others use a slanty ₿. Many Nostr apps use just letters, but half use SATS for the plural and half use SAT also for the plural. Coinbase, Kraken at friends tend to use the hamburger. Ditto seems to use the hamburger, the word Sats and the lightning bolt all at the same time. Binance uses the S-dollar-sign thing. On and on.

So at least 5 genuine contenders, and even two is one too many. It's hard to argue it's not an issue, or that any one is in the lead.

They want to forcibly rename sats to bitcoins in the name of adoption as if we don’t already have more than a decade of history established using the word sats which came about organically.

Zap is more like tip in my book. The action of sending sats / bitcoin. To zap is to tip. I was zapped, I was tipped. We’re not going to change tip to cent.

The problem there is the symbol. If the lightning bolt becomes the symbol for both Sats and Zaps, that doesn't work. Because "zap" is used as a verb and also a noun, and one zap can be worth 100 Sats (or 200 or 300 or whatever the amount of Sats in the Zap)

I do also. But it's messy and inconsistent. If you see here in Ditto, you've got "7 zaps" on your note. But actually you don't, you have 1 Zap with 7 Sats.

Either way I imagine we can agree newcomers would be confused by all this. Question is are they being *unnecessarily* confused? Is spring cleaning in order?

You can zap once, many sats. Or you can zap twice 1 sat each. Zap = tip, sat is the bitcoin cent.

I don’t agree, because if you look at the way most clients show zap counts, they simply put the total amount of sats to the right of the ⚡️ symbol. Why is this so hard to understand?

Yeah I don’t find it hard to understand in the same way I don’t find “tipping” fiat hard to understand. Perhaps just a UI change to show “7 sats” but to keep the term zapping to denote the action. “Tipping” was considered before zapping stuck, but it was regarded as too “fiat”.

Yeah, just herding cats I suppose. If you look at Chrous as the bellweather for the AndOtherStuff initiative then "send ecash" is the action.

I know very little about eCash I have to admit. It seemed to arrive with a lot of dev fanfare and limited info for the average user. End result was me largely ignoring it and focusing on stacking sats.

Because bitcoin on Lightning Network, as the name sugests moves fast, like a Lightning. So you can pay instantly to anyone, like zapping on nostr.

No need to worry — you can pay with sats, zaps, or ecash. In the end, it's (more or less) the same thing: Bitcoin on the Lightning Network. That's why it's usable in retail.

Ecash tokens, though based on Bitcoin, haven't gained widespread usage. Their use case is quite niche, and I don't see them being adopted broadly anytime soon.

At least there's a ready-to-go symbol. To get to a single undisputed Sats symbol used across Nostr, the exchanges like Coinbase, Kraken, POS terminals like Square, wallets like Strike—and unicode to go along—we could be talking 10 years.

And rawdogging it with letters alone (SATS) feels like Solana territory. You need a proper symbol to take a serious charge at the dollar, or yen, or whatever.

Problem is Sats needed an undisputed symbol winner yesterday, not in 10 years.

Sats are just a small part of a Bitcoin, and that's why 'sats' is the right term. I don't really care what the Nostr community decides to call it — sats are used beyond Nostr, and renaming them here won’t change their real name. Sats are the standard.
