What's the nostr darkpill story? How will it fail?
Discussion
Overrun by AI chatbots.
The only way it “fails” is in someone’s mind who wants it to become something that it “isn’t” , whatever that may be
Hypothetically, someone could create a super app that captures a large portion of users and then starts offering "cool features" off-protocol. This could eventually lead to the app becoming a walled garden.
I hope this scenario does not occur.
nostr:npub12262qa4uhw7u8gdwlgmntqtv7aye8vdcmvszkqwgs0zchel6mz7s6cgrkjgets really bored and makes thousands of Spamisol bots.
It won't
- There's no incentive to run a relay. Either leads to many small relays making discovery hard, or a few huge relays that is just centralization.
- broadcasting and downloading to/from multiple relays in inefficient and won't scale.
- json encoding is great for dev bootstraping but is very inefficient and limits the protocol (see nip 94/95)
iOS and Android provide GPU powered LLM integration, and centralized platforms provide high quality user-controlled moderation and filtering. Most users stay where they are.
Interesting discussions, but I think they are all too focused on the "Twitter replacement" angle. I think nostr will evolve into a more community oriented social network, where people connect to specific relays based on their interests or geography.
Like let's say someone builds a client for people that like video games. They run their own relays that only work with that specific client so they can curate the content and cultivate a certain type of experience. Someone else builds a client only for cooking enthusiasts and does the same. A user interested in both could use the same keys and still find their people on both of there's overlap.
There's so many possibilities for nostr which is what makes it so exciting. Who knows what it will evolve into. Being a Twitter replacement isn't the only possibility.
Let me think... A fully public append-only log of potentially most/all our social activity, all linked to the same pubkey, which offers only very weak pseudonymity
What could possibly 🤔 wrong?
Jury is out whether it will succeed for the social media use case. Still lots of other use cases, though.
Censorship and SPAM
I don't think it will happen, but maybe just never reaching normies, being too niche, and become like the Fediverse where it exists but none of the people you know use it.
That most people simply dont want to look for an alternative, or change in general.
I'm not a heavy tech person per se. But it only takes a little bit of research and curiosity to understand what Nostr is about and what its potentials are.
The problem is that most people don't want to spend that small amount of time doing research on something new. They want everything served on a silver platter without putting ANY fucking effort in.
That's what makes most people today such easy targets for big tech. People are giving their soul away for free without even realizing it.
So the big question is, how are we going to wake people up from the drowsy online reality they are in? And how can we "force" them to spend just a little of their precious time to make them realize that Nostr is superior in every way?
Protocol bloat. Too many NIPs, making it difficult to impliment/keep updated
