Confession Time 🫣

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro and I’m finally going to get a new one.

What do I need to know?

What do you use it for?

Everything.

Video editing?

Casually, yes. For some work and some personal projects but nothing wildly demanding

An m2 pro with 16gb ram should be more than enough.

The m2 chip is insanely fast so even the m2 air would probably meet your needs, as long as you’re not doing heavy video editing (air only goes up to 8gb ram)

My strategy has always been to upgrade whatever MBP I buy so that it is able to last me this long… My concern with your strategy is that I would have to replace it sooner. Thoughts on that?

I do the same lol. Just upgraded from my 2016 (which still works fine tbh). The thing is the new ones are sooo good and more and more stuff is being delegated to the ☁️ so computers don’t even need to be that good these days. If you wanna future proof i would just prioritize getting a lot of ram. If you ever get really into video editing you’ll want 32gb.

Great feedback, thank you so much

If you buy one soon, it will probably come standard with the White Paper written into the OS. Sorry, that is about all I know though!

Use the old one as a bitcoin full node

This is my plan 🫡

That the m1/m2 is awesome but can also be a compatibility nuisance even after all this time.

For example?

Less about compatibility and more about some apps not being able to take advantage of the improved performance. The chips are fucking solid though

Part of why I am upgrading, other than the fact that it’s been almost a decade lol… Because I am actually having compatibility issues now not being able to upgrade the OS. 🤕

I’m excited though, this is more fun to me than a new car. 🤓

No examples... you'll just stumble across them when you're doing unusual things.

Ok, one example if your really really want it... I recently noticed that VirtualBox still isn't great on Apple processor.

It doesn't get better than 2013 macbooks

It’s only slightly younger than my daughter and it’s still kicking!!

and run a node on the old one?

Max the ram for the model that suits you best.

The M2 Air, maxed out as you like is a very respectable machine and friendly on the lap or in the bag.

Really anything with Apple Silicon will be a major improvement. Even the low end Air.

Get a Chromebook or Chromebox like I did in 2021 after 20 years of MacOS (that I still enjoy very much at the office)
