Dude I actually solved this problem. I made it so NIP-05s are required in my software, and I recreated Mastodon domain blocking semantics on Nostr. We might as well just go back to Mastodon at this point. Am I overreacting?

Yes you are overreacting.

This is my fucking life. I take this very seriously. I want Nostr to win. I work extremely hard every day, morning to night. I neglect my own health because I am trying to get to the next level. This stupid shit took me off course, caused me stress, and forced me to implement negative UX because some loser who ISN'T a foreign government agent decided to attack the network "because he truly cares". Maybe you don't understand me or my life, but I am reacting appropriately based on who I am.

Ok 👍

Better him now, than a foreign government later?

There are other people on here, including in this thread and reading this thread, who are in a similar position, but who are staying completely calm because they saw this coming and were prepared for it.

This was going to happen, sooner or later, and we're actually relieved that it happened sooner and we can deal with it, now. There were some clients and relays who had a lackadaisical attitude toward spam-prevention, who just got caught with their pants down. That hurts all of us, but it's on them. They now have a chance to clean up and improve, before we have millions of people on here and such a circus makes the front page news. Or they can give up and make room for better engineers.

Effective risk mitigation is part of the job.

Side note I always thought lackadaisical was a fake word. Good to see this being invalidated.

😂

You shouldn’t be neglecting your health, take care of yourself. There will always be bumps in the road, it’s how we react to them that define us, not “getting to the next level”.

I'm singing Bon Jovi right now. Ugh. 😂

Anyways, could this valid Nostr address only feature be a flag that server admins can enable or disable? Maybe this is already a flag?

I feel this feature is a good spam deterrent right now, but it's more of a band-aid fix since spammers can easily buy a few domain names and implement valid addresses for their bots or they could use existing free providers.

Either way, great work on finding a solution. For community based software packages like yours, this works as all new users of a community have a Nostr address assigned to them, right?

The problem is this will shift responsibility to the free providers that want to give people NIP-05s. Not solve anything.

This was always the case. Not all providers are the same nor do they carry the same reputation. Some will be known as the spam provider.

Yes, now on my feed I only see people that have nip05. I don't like it.

I don't either! But what the fuck am I supposed to do?

git revert

Maybe this could be a settings on Ditto app, where users could opt in or out.

Can't do that boss. Ditto is a server, not a regular Nostr client.

Ok but if I login using an account with people I follow that have no nip05, is it possible to show these profiles notes on my feed? Thanks.

So only global feed or search doesn't show no nip05 notes.

nip05 are too easily available to be a deterrent to spammers. reply guy would change his npub every few hours or so, getting a nip05 takes a few seconds at most. this wouldn't deter him. Only works because very few people are using this, so reply guy is not concerned about it.

You're wrong.

great argument! Could you elaborate on it?

no need to buy a bunch of domains, use the most popular clients that provide nip05 and get one in a few clicks. possibly automatable, if there's no captcha.

ok then. But still seems to me as a lose-lose game. It would probably just alienate your users from the rest of the nostr community, since most would be blocked. Unless you are able to create a great federation of servers/relays committed to the same goals, as they did in mastodon.

Crazy you don't have a nip05 you can have as many as you want

what is bad about nip05 only? Your feed should be spam-free

Yes I agree it's the best solution he just need to get a nip05 I think you missed the context.

Now I created one.

You might as well just go back to Mastodon
