that "mute" button in the Google Meet UI is not preventing Google from hearing you, you realize, right?
Ever wonder why it says "oh wait, are you talking right now? your mic is 'muted'." Translation: we have still been recording everything you're saying - that's how we know you're talking - just not relaying it to everyone else in the call.
I’ve noticed discord does this as well.
This goes for any app/website that has mic permissions
The fact that people would think that it behaves in any other way is what's actually baffling to me.
When clients or colleagues reach out to us with a google or zoom (or teams) link.. we politely respond with an offer of jitsi, mirotalk, or nextcloud talk
We all have a duty of care to each other to refuse to engage with these platforms
