Consumers assume if the FDA approved something, it must be safe, so they don't do their own research. They outsource this research to the government.

In a free market people would be a lot more discerning before poisoning their children with FDA approved fruit loops

I don't necessarily disagree, but it's a fact that people, in general, are not good at performing accurate research that leads them to the right answer. They are too often guided by their personal biases, and what they've heard from others they trust. When it comes to complex matters on subjects they not have appropriate expertise in, they will almost always arrive at the wrong answer, and cling to it because it was based in emotion, and not objective fact.

It's not "complex". Do we really need research to know that fruit loops isn't food?

Which is why I only drink beer... Just check the label it doesn't have the little "these statements are not approved by the FDA" blah blah blah
