2023 Prediction: >90% relays will require some sort of payment.

The only relays whose incentives are aligned with their users are those of paid relays. Value for value.

Free relays will have to find other incentives: donations, sponsors, advertisers aka not you.

I'll probably be able to keep the public damus relay alive via damus premium. Maybe clients can sponsor public relays this way.

I volunteer as tribute lol. I do enjoy running the relay for fun but it would be rad to get paid for it…. I enjoy the challenge of trying to block spam without a paywall so I would prefer not to add one.

You're a braver man than I. 4K paywall in https://nostr.naut.social mainly to limit expense exposure and reduce chances of exceeding resources without warning. Right now, sending all to Turkey anyway.

It is most normal to be paid for services rendered. relay's continuous growth is an important part of the development of the Nostr ecosystem. Adequate profit is an important stimulus for the development of relays. It is not a good situation to run a relay just for volunteering or trying or for fun.
