Getting blasted by a wave in the ocean at Jones Beach, New York. I must have been around 3 and a half.

Wow, interesting! Must have been a hell of an experience for a 3yo!

My parents were right there. I was safe, but the sensation of getting upended and drinking salt water was memorable.

Of course they were. Beautiful memory 💜

Getting my first bike. It was a superman bike. I was probably about 4.

Most of my earliest memories are the most exciting or scary times in my life.

So if you anyone wants to make someone have good memories with them they should make them exciting.

Good tip! My youngest is 2. I’m not sure if he’ll remember anything from this age and before but I have plenty of time to make some good memories with him as he grows up.

I definitely have a few memories from being around two years old. I hated lima beans, and whenever I got them, I would squish them into the tray of my high chair. And I used to look out the window and wonder what all those floaty things were in the sky. They turned out to be the blood vessels in my eyes.

Very specific 😆 crazy how a toddler can develop such strong feelings towards objects.

Also we had a cat that gave birth on a bed when I was between 2-3 and I remember trying to pick her up and realized a kitten was coming out of her.

One time I found the cut off end of an electrical cord with the plug still attached in a closet and tried to plug it into an outlet. The shock knocked me onto the floor and my mom thought I had been electrocuted.

I guess you could say that was the first time I got zapped.

Weird memory of being in my garage in my childhood home at like 3. Distinctly remember being like, whoa I’m alive. Lol.

😆 Alive in garage!

The fall of USSR

What part? Did you see something on tv? 1990?

December 1991. It’s quite blur, but I remember my relatives being confused and distressed. At that point pretty much nobody could imagine what to expect next and how life without the union would look like.

Communist propaganda was extremely strong back then and weakening of the communist party scared the hell out of people. They felt like it was the end of the world.

Interesting 🧐

My grandma was a communist but no one else in the family cared one bit. They looked at her as “the communist”. Life went on business as usual.

My grandma had her home and land confiscated by communists and one of her sons still grew up to be a communist.

I think most people with a connection to eastern europe or other commie states will have had at least one family member who took the poison red pill.

Made get-togethers more interesting.

Indeed

Some are still now.

Sadly

Was she a USSR born?probably depends on the family’s political views and expectations. E.g. we lived with grandparents and were close to getting own apartment from the government. USSR falling apart meant losing many benefits and subsidies promised in exchange for years of work.

I think so.

Having my ears vacuumed

Yikes 😬 how old were you do you know?

I think around 2.

Slept with my hand over my ear for years. I'm guessing they're connected.

My late grandmother used to take me to square with a fountain. My earliest memory is playing by that fountain

Wonderful 😌 I also have some of the best memories with my grandma

Falling off my tricycle and smashing my face on the ground and losing my front teeth

Ouch. Not the most pleasant earliest memory 😱

playing with the Fisher Price school house set in the basement at my grandparents house.

You even remember the brand? 😝 kidding. My guess is you learned about it later?

The thing is, I do remember knowing that it was fisher price, but that may just be later knowledge seeping in.

Being too poor to afford a skateboard, so my dad built me one. At the time, I was embarrassed to ride it, but now I truly appreciate what he did and wish I still had it.

Damn. What a man! I’m not crying!! 😢 beautiful 😻

Getting lost after exploring a creekbed on the way home from kindergarten.

Oh no 🙈 how did you find our way back?

I eventually found my way back to the sidewalks of the neighborhood, though 20m+ away on foot and still lost. A neighbor noticed me, figured out why I was alone and where I lived, and got me home to the profuse gratitude of my parents. I know, impossible to imagine nowadays.

Wholesome religious community in the 90's. People looked out for each other. Among everything else, I hope that bitcoin can bring that ethos back.

Sitting on the back of a burrow in a forest in Venezuela when I was ~2yrs old. Prolly a memory of a memory of a memory tho.

Seeing quite a few from around age of 2!

Reading your post

Getting told off by my Mum for pulling the fire guard down while playing with my Thundercats. Must have been ~3 years old.

😆

Thank you for the feelgood thread my good sir

A sunset at my childhood house, we had a balcony with a nice view on a big meadow. 🌄

Beautiful 😻 🌅

One of my first vivid memories was climbing out of the crib. Pillow first, then escape. I've heard people say that it's not possible to remember anything at that age.

Very cool! I believe you can remember as far back as birth. My district earliest memory is at 5mo in my crib with my mom taking a photo of me while putting a head scarf of my head. I remember clearly I didn’t like it and tried to take it off. Then she made me laugh somehow and snapped the photo.

It’s not a coincidence that everyone who has a distinct early memory from the crib also has a corresponding photograph of the precise moment…

Im not saying that’s not a real memory, I’m just suggesting that it is possible that your brain has recreated that scene and associated memory to match the photograph.

Yes, very possible. I have no way of verifying the validity of my memory - if it was pre or post photo.

Your original question is an interesting one for sure. Now I have myself doubting whether my earliest memories are originals, or if they have been rewritten in my memory after flipping through a family photo album

I do have other mementos around that age though and no photos. Could also be figments of my imagination though!

Memories*

I think the human memory is rather tragic. We have so many great experiences throughout our life but many moments are just lost. It’s a great reason to be journaling semi-regularly. I should get back to that!

Reminded me to write down the day my 2nd son was born. I wrote a journal entry of my first, but not 2nd.

3yrs old. Running away from home when my sisters were born. Got stuck in a brier bush in the woods & my father found me.

Home birth? Twin sisters?

Twin sisters. Not a home birth.

Playing with some construction set as a baby. Memory is probably flawed though as I even remember the country, which wasn’t my home.
