It might be your attention, data about yourself, or the value of the content you're contributing while getting nothing in return for that value.
Yes. There is usually a catch. "Answer this quick survey" or "give us your email".
Sometimes though it's just "please take my shit, because I don't want it junking up garage any longer."

The great thing about Nostr is that we have a way to pay people without their permission.
It doesn't have to be "free" of you don't want it to be.
I give to help, whether its time, knowledge, or material goods. And those I try to give to are often suspicious although I only have their best interest at heart
