What’s the cheapest phone I could run lineage OS on or another open source OS that degoogles?

I don’t like that graphene OS is only on pixel phones.

Do you want secure boot? (Thats the reason GrapheneOS is only on pixels). If you aren't interested in secure boot, then you can run Calyx/Lineage on any android phone that isn't carrier locked AFAIK

Well, not the only reason.... but thats the most important reason.

Reading up on what a secure boot is now…

Secure boot is a process that uses cryptography and untamperable physical circuitry (just like in a Bitcoin hardware wallet) to guarantee your phone boots into GrapheneOS and not a fake/modified version of Graphene that your phone got 'infected' with. It's the highest level of security available on consumer mobile phones.

Only Google phones have an open secure boot process, so therefore GrapheneOS only works on Google phones. Other Android phones often don't have a secure boot process, and the ones that do are inconsistent (can't guarantee every phone has the same process, even within the same family of phones) and less secure. As a result, GrapheneOS can not work on non-Google phones.

You can run many OS on a Pixel and leverage secure boot, but Graphene offers the best security/privacy.

You won't find secure boot on non-Google phones, so you won't be able to install Graphene, but you can still run Calyx/Lineage which at least degoogle the phone.

Thanks for clearing that up. I can not zap your profile it seems. Set it up, please.

Pine64 has the pinephone & pinephone pro, both run Linux & can run some android app.

The phone is yours & you control what is run on it.

I’ll look into that as well. Does it have a secure boot?

Your profile also didn’t show zap option…I recommend it :D

It doesn't have "secure boot". From what I can gather "secure boot" was introduced as a way to lock in the OS to the hardware.

To spoof booting another operating system is almost impossible because of the permissions required to do the spoofing & memory required.

How do I add zap?

Seems to be two camps of philosophies, I’ll have to research to really form an opinion. Thank you for the input.

You gotta link a wallet to nostr!

Seems wallet of Satoshi is the best until I get to know the system better.

Thanks for the prompting 🙏

Worked! Welcome to the zaplands, friend.

Unfortunately the best experience on a degoogled mobile OS is on a Pixel. Pixel 6A is probably the cheapest you can have brand new.

CalyxOS does not come with the same security benefits than GrapheneOS but it's quite good. Unfortunately they don't support the Mi A2 anymore, which was the cheapest phone to degoogled.

The only non-pixel phones they supports aren't cheap.

LineageOS even without GApps isn't degoogled and doesn't support secure boot. It's good to extend the life of a device but isn't near GrapheneOS.

So if you really want to avoid Google hardware and go cheap IMO your best bet is an old OnePlus model that is well supported by DivestOS and with relockable bootloader. DivestOS is a fork of LineageOS that is quite degoogled and harden (with a few GrapheneOS features)

It does not support either microG nor Sandboxed Google Services and so compatibility with apps could be disappointing. Check on plexus.techlore.tech to see if your needed apps needs Google services or microG to work.
