Why Nostr?

You don’t want a large tech companies, such as Meta or X, to hold and be in charge of all your data.

You want to use social media to communicate with people online in an ad-free, algorithm-free environment — like you used to years ago. Just humans being humans without software getting in the way.

You hate platform lock-in. You can ditch any Nostr client and join another without losing all your friends and content. When you switch Nostr clients, your entire social graph comes with you.

Many have become dependant on them. They can be good. They can make life easier. The problems arise when algorithms become weaponized.

Many to not gather anything valuable from the algos. The user is the value, not the algo. The attention of the user is sold, so the algo main purpose is to increase attention. And that’s the non-weaponized aspect of the algorithms…

Yeah it really is. When it comes to the issue that I talk about for work it’s also a concern because they also collect data on children without consent etc.

Why Nostr? Because I don't want to live in a world where my thoughts and conversations are curated by algorithms developed by companies that know more about my purchasing habits than my closest friends. Nostr gives me the feeling of returning to the Wild West of the internet, where freedom and discovery came first. It's like Bitcoin for social media: decentralized, immutable, and free from the control of tech giants. It's a step into a future where I decide who I am and how I'm perceived, not an algorithm. With Nostr, I'm not the product; I'm the curator, the explorer, and above all, the human.

I think it is possible to allow a small amount of advertising on Nostr, but user can getting to split the profits.

It's all beautifully and accurately said, but that's not all of it. When the initial enchantment wears off, you realize that you are in the Bitcoin community where a particular understanding of freedom prevails.

I hope more people will be joining, as it's a unique opportunity to build other communities based on the principles Derek has mentioned, which alone might unite us.

Sadly, I think that currently, most people simply leave when they realize that it's primarily the Bitcoin community so far, without recognizing an opportunity.
