there is a rich history of campus protests in this country. but if you think people should be kicked out of a place for squatting on property and demanding things I suggest you check out No Other Land

Green card holders aren't citizens who can make demands.

There's a difference in rights when you're a citizen, full stop.

I don't believe people should be able to come as guests and then try to extort universities.

But that's just me.

It is just you. You can read about this story online. No blackmail, no extortion or whatever you’re making up. Meanwhile the rest of us will be continuing to oppose the genocide.

At least we can agree that people shouldn’t come to a place as guests and then proceed to steal land or bomb universities or hospitals or bulldoze homes or destroy the entire country and then make demands for everyone who lives there to leave.

What do you describe squatting on private property & then making demands or else?

How is that not blackmail?

Protesting is fine, blackmail isn't.

Further, i don't know what the war has to do with this topic or my original point.

No one is talking about the war here, as this man chose to move to the USA with full knowledge that the USA is a supporter of Israel as its the only place in the middle east where people can coexist regardless of faith.

Hence the 2M Palestinians living with Israeli passports in Israel.

This man also CHOSE to go to Columbia University with full knowledge that they are supporters of Israel.

What a joke.

nostr:npub1ugnq57hn8va6xqr5zywy2eunem6c624583vkt0dmv40ep7tnnxkqrr898l so you’re saying he shouldn’t have first amendment rights to protest the policies of the university he attended? And despite not being convicted of a crime he should lose residency in the country and the right to live with his wife and child because he lead a protest?!

If it were up to me I wouldn't deport him.

I wouldn't want him to be the rallying cry for the leftists & I wouldn't want to make him famous.

But to be honest, if you're gonna be a green card holder you should be smarter if you actually didn't want this to be a potential outcome.

This makes me think that he wanted this to happen because he seems like a smart fellow.

He didn't simply protest though,

His wife's words:

"When things started at Columbia, his main role was the lead negotiator [between student protesters and Columbia administrators.]"

& to reiterate my only point on this matter;

This is not a freedom of speech issue, it's a non-citizen blackmail issue.

To say that this deportation attempt threatens free speech laws is insane.

I think Twitter banning Trump was a freedom of speech issue.

What was your stance on that at the time?

Just wondering because most leftists who claim freedom of speech is important were quiet or vocally stating that Twitter has a right to ban him.

Protests without leverage achieve nothing. Occupying property is a fundamental tool of non-violent civil resistance as developed by MLK and others. If you ask politely, nobody gives up power or agrees to changes.

I never said you can't protest your beliefs and make a rukus,

Just don't cry foul when the consequences are achieved.

Considering the words his wife spoke, he knew damn well this was a possibility & in my opinion he wanted this to happen.

He's famous now. Their peoples love them a martyr.

In most countries a permanent resident has almost all the rights of a citizen. In the US they’re allowed to donate to political campaigns and hold local elected office. They part of the system not visitors.

As a permanent resident in Aotearoa New Zealand I can vote just like citizens.

Free speech rights extend to everyone regardless of immigration status.

I understand this PoV, but blackmail isn't covered under freedom of speech & this isnt New Zealand.

Green card holders do not carry the same rights.

I understand wanting the laws changed to this effect, but it still wouldn't apply to freedom of speech.
