For the libertarians and anarchists among you: yes, I'm suggesting we should potentially tax ad-supported social media and search. I think we should be potentially forcing these platforms and services to bear some of the costs of the damage they are bringing to society. And of course, I think this will be good for decentralized protocols like Nostr and BlueSky -- which I think is a good thing.

I donβt think platforms will ever bear the cost. The additional dollars towards taxes coming from them will simply be passed down to consumers in some way; either higher amounts of privacy breaches or something else to increase monetization per user.
We got away from the shit that is ad driven censorship at TWTR and you want NOSTR to go back? π
Hmmm. If only a government was in place that actually supported agency/autonomy rather than actively opposing it... then maybe that idea would have some traction. You'd have to really bury the intent under some dollar signs to get any votes, I think.
Not from a libertarian / anarchist / nihilism perspective - but from an operational perspective, which country to pay the taxes to? And how will the laws of media and freedom of expression be implemented via these countries, upon Nostr?
Devβs building tools and clients from more oppressive countries would not face the same liberty as in US, and even in US there are so many problems
Iβm sure money and traceability will be an issue, and some will have to register their companies formally as something to show there is income, credit worthiness, funding opportunities if any.
But not all will do it for the purpose of being constrained by their government and the country laws as a media company.
Well, all of the offending companies are currently US domiciled, so it's pretty straightforward.
Media control is not just via ad or rhetoric leaders but also govβt and in US FBI and CIA and NSA - I mean Snowden, Assange, Twitter Files, and these are just the reasons one
How do you ensure complete freedom of media when government in the US expect the media to swing a certain way ?
