Why is it that gaming for 12 hours straight is perceived as worse than binge watching tv for 12 hours straight?
I’d argue that gaming is much more mentally challenging. Thoughts?

It’s worse because gaming you’re more likely closer to the device to game as for binge watching tv you’re further from the screen meaning less of a effect.
Woah a very different argument than i was expecting
Assuming one plays "mobile" games?
Can also assume one binge-watches on a Mobile device?
Then screen distance (and EMS) have the same impact?
“Don’t sit too close to the TV or it’ll hurt your eyes,” was just what parents said to get kids out of the way so they could see the damn screen. 😆
Id say gaming still a bit better for cognitive function
I would agree with that. However, I haven’t done either of that 😅
I don't have the capacity to do either... But when I game for a couple of hours I'm engaged and stimulated. When the wife and I watch a show before bed we're just getting closer to sleep. As for the kids... They're homeschooled on paper with no screen time.. Back to your original post gaming is probably a more positive use of time than passively watchingTV. With gaming there's interaction and mental stimulation. There's community and interaction with actual people. But watching TV or gaming for 12 hours straight are both probably not something people should do regularly and anyone who does either should probably try to touch grass and dirt more often
They’re both horrible.
Waste of time and brain power.
Make you dumber.
Etc.
As much as people can get addicted to and use gaming in an unhealthy way, the truth is actually the exact opposite regarding gaming. Particularly with team based and/or real time strategy games. There have been some really interesting studies about performance, reaction time, ability to make decisions, etc between people in their profession vs how much they played video games.
if directly asked about being "perceived as worse than," most people would likely come to similar conclusions academically. Self-depreciating public admissions of binge-watching serves as a virtue showcasing one's taste in popular media. Games that people invest 12 hours into tend to reject the notion that this social connotation holds any significance. Consequently, the posture prescribed among consumers of mainstream media often harbors hostility towards individuals actively seeking entertainment through different avenues.
Do people really say it’s worse?
At first thought, they’re relatively the same, compared to getting outside or reading a book or something, but I’d think most games are better than TV, cognitively.
Oh no m! you’re totally right
Gaming is active, requires problem solving, strategy, reaction time, focused engagement, and will legit get your heart racing.
TV is completely passive and sedentary.
Whatever the negatives of doing either for 12 hours are, gaming is by far the better option for your mind and body, imo.
I’d say doing any one thing for 12 hours straight is a bad idea.
Yeah duh but which one is worse
Please enumerate any/all activities that you can say you have done “for 12 hours straight” that would elicit applause instead of caution.
By "watching TV" do you mean cable?
Binge watching documentary stuff on a streaming service is probably better than grinding in an mmo.
The only people watching cable that I know of are 50+
Everyone else is on YT or other streaming services these days.
