Hi nostr, just checking in before we head out to a local meetup. We're part of a small group of freedom minded folks that like to meet occasionally to talk about local events, but tonite we'll have a couple people discussing ham radio. I'm interested in this because it could be a good way to communicate with each other if power/internet went down for any length of time. So we're gonna go check it out. Yall have a good evening nostr friends. #grownostr #homesteading #localmeetups

Nice chickens you have there, lady! πŸ‘ŒπŸ“

Peafowl, not chickens😊

They're all chickens to me! πŸ˜πŸ“πŸ“πŸ“

Learning about radio can crossover into so many other things! It'll help you with wifi, learning more about our atmosphere, some physics, and lots of other pockets of interest πŸ˜€

ooh! learning about ham radio is on my list

I got in to ham radio for backup communications as a part of my preparedness self reliance plan a few years ago. Also it's kind of a fun hobby that like many others is as expensive and intricate as you want to make it.

It was interesting, and someone brought up LMR (land mobile radio), as a good option for more local comms.

For super local and to quickly get into it, I'd recommend gmrs. $10, no exam, and everyone in the household is covered.

Before everyone gets all up in my post, I'm 100% in the don't tell me what I can and can't do crowd. That being said, there are some crazy assed stickers to government rules out there and they will make your life a living hell. I am a licensed amateur operator because of it. Hopefully they will all die off soon and we can free up some of these restrictions. Also, you probably don't even need the $10 license and I can I struct you on how to turn a $25 Chinese radio into A UHF/VHF/GMRS/FRS/MURS radio.

Allegedly.
