I cannot convince people to build a node. I can show them that it's like %400 cheaper than buying a start9 or Umbrel, and they just literally beg me to tell them to buy a start9 or Umbrel.

The American urge to feel competent and validated through expensive purchases is indominable.

How do I build a node that won't be expensive?

Buy a used laptop. A Dell Latitude or a Lenovo ThinkPad manufactured in the last 6 or 7 years is fine. Don't pay more than $250.

Local colleges often have surplus / disposition sales where you can get good battle-tested machines cheap.

Install Start9 or Umbrel on it.

Thank you

Oh make sure it has 2TB of storage or be prepared to install a 2TB drive in it.

I’ve looked into running my own node including the Start9 diy option (not detailed enough procedure for a novice like myself).

I have found the whole thing confusing and daunting at the same time.

If this is not your field you are going to struggle, feel frustrated and maybe make mistakes that can end up being costly and compromise your security.

It’s not the same as learning to make pancakes where you just chuck them in the bin until you’ve learned the correct method.

What we need are proper step by step tutorials for total beginners, perhaps someone reading this can direct me. Thank you.

Just my 2 sats

Have a conversation with AI about how to flash an OS image using Etcher. Have it break down the steps as if it has to explain how to make pancakes to a 5th grader.

Thank you.

Never thought of using ai as a tool.

Will look into it again.

I will run my own node one day.

Thank you.
