Parents and medical professionals shouldn’t have any say in the matter. Let the government decide for you.
That's my concern with this. Feels like overreach.
On the other hand, we tend to expect the government to intervene judiciously in cases of child abuse.
My personal rule of thumb is whatever increases personal liberty is the correct path. Anything that decreases liberty is the wrong path. It really helps clarify things.
Leaving the choice to parents to decide what is best for their family vs letting Bruce Skaug decide for everyone is a no brainer.
I don't think this problem they're trying to solve even exists in my state. This law is really making a statement more than anything. Whether it's appropriate action depends on whether or not you believe the child wanting to gender transition is a victim of abusive influence by adults. I think you would have to evaluate any individual instance for that.
Transgender people are less than 1% of the population. As many real problems and challenges we have and this is what politicians decide is their number 1 priority?
Also another personal rule of mine is if they are screaming we have to do this “for the children” or to “protect” you then it is an immediate red flag.
It’s not to protect you or children. It’s an emotional manipulation to keep you from questioning the motive. If you question it you are a monster who doesn’t want to protect children.
I think it's one of those rare situations where it's egregious government overreach into the lives of citizens, but would also actually do more good than harm.
The analogy about stopped clocks comes to mind.
Good point. If a parent gave their kids methamphetamine we would probably expect the state to intervene in that case. It's violating the parents right to decide what's best for their child, but it's also clear that the parent is abusing that right and harming the child.
But also I think my state legislature is reacting to a problem that isn't really happening in my state. This is very conservative Idaho, not wacko leftist California. The two families in the state that want to gender transition their kid will just move across the state line to Washington.
They're more making a statement with this law than solving a problem that actually exists.
After rereading my response, I feel like I worded that poorly.
I don't think the government should intervene like this, and I would consider this, even as just a 'statement' to be just another in a long series of encroachments that shouldn't be tolerated.
But that said, some laws/regulations/whatever, while representing overreach and should be fought, might also simultaneously result in some good, and I think this is one of those cases.
