I 100% agree with your statement about worship. I never understand it since I was a child, and I still don't.

I have a hard time differentiating between notions of working on the self and worshipping the self. We all worship something, it comes down to whether it is primarily internal or external.
What would an atheist or agnostic worship? If one doesn't understand worship then are they just not aware of it? Maybe they worship random shit everyday, and so become oblivious to it because it changes every day?
The atheist is mostly strictly in the god is dead camp.
“In the day-to-day trenches of adult life... there is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship.”
David Foster Wallace
That sounds like attention.

I don't think it's attention, at least not in a strictly receptive manner. You could say that worship is a merging process. There is a signal of intent that we haven't been able to measure using any physical apparatus. The problem with attention is that most things that are examined outside ourselves are only mirrors of ourself.
