Unix has always been the best operating system in the world because of its philosophy:

- Write programs that do one thing and do it well.

- Write programs that work together.

- Write programs that handle text streams, because it is a universal interface.

FreeBSD is a pure and hard Unix because its code derives from BSD which in turn derives from the original Unix of AT&T Labs.

Linux on the other hand is a Unix clone since its code was written from scratch and never shared code with the original Unix.

It is true that for years Linux followed the Unix philosophy but that has long since come to an end, so today Linux should not even be considered a Unix clone because of the horrendous systemd controlled by Lennart Poettering and in turn by Microsoft.

What is happening to Linux could very well happen to Bitcoin, so keep your eyes open, no matter how good a project is it can end up degrading, but luckily we have the BSD family that unlike the Linux family have always had very clear objectives, to be UNIX.

I ran FreeBSD back in the early 2000s. Now you have me wanting to give it another go.

Would you suggest FreeBSD, GhostBSD, Dragonfly, other?

FreeBSD always although DragonFlyBSD is a very interesting project and also works very well.

🚀

FreeBSD w/ X11 + xfce up and running in a VM. I forgot how much cleaner and simpler it is.

It is much more consistent than linux distributions.

I was just thinking I need to set up a VM. I know I can use different init systems with Linux, the issue is that fracturing makes searching for fixes for issues much harder.

Where do I get a list of available programs for freeBSD, like its repo?

I'm starting to become more curious BSD.

But this made me look into some information on distrowatch if there are any OSs without SystemD. If correct, it seems like OpenMandriva and Slackware are without SystemD.

Dose that mean those Linux systems are more "free" from Lennart and Microsoft without it?

That Linux users should rather pick system like those, if not BSD?

Exactly, it also has Devuan which is a Debian port without systemd.

You could also check out Void, Antix or Alpine if you’re looking for a Linux distro without systemd. But nostr:nprofile1qqs0eac2gh86s9l24qfmnw52xawhz0f3d862yleaetpafygjmanaxlspz4mhxue69uhhqatjwpkx2un9d3shjtnrdaksz9rhwden5te0dehhxarj9ehhsarj9ejx2as5ruqph makes a good point, why not try out one of the BSDs? They are a class apart, and one of the flavours is likely to fit your use case (server, desktop, firewall, toaster…)

Looking into FreeBSD. Gonna try it out in VM.

...Correction:

OpenMandriva does use SystemD.

*already happened

BSD vs Linux = Monero vs Bitcoin

Do you really think an init system with run levels that create various guessing games regarding dependencies is superior to integrated dependency management?

Seems like inevitable progress to me.

Change my mind!
