#asknostr #mining

Is anyone here familiar with btc mining, as far as how they are set up. We'll be having a town meeting soon, where part of the discussion will be about compaints from neighbors that live near a mining facility. The complaint is in regard to noise. Are there practical ways that mining operators can mitigate this problem? I ask because i think miners would be more welcome in locations with nearby homes, if the noise issue could be resolved. What do other miners do to deal with noise complaints? I could mention ideas at our meeting.

These mining farms can be very loud. Liquid cooling (immersion cooling) helps but you still have to cool the liquid. The biggest noise is the volume of air needed for cooling. Think about a box fan on high, then multiply it by hundreds. There are some "silencers" they can put in the air intake/exhausts, but I don't know how effective they are. To the best of my knowledge there are no silent farms, miners are a business and profit is what matters most. Some businesses care more about their neighbors than others. I've heard a lot of mining farms are Chinese owned, I have not researched this. Might want to investigate the company first.

Yeah, i have heard that many are chinese owned. The locals have hired an attorney to see if they have any recourse. The attorney said that if they are a nuisance, there is definitely a case for legal action. We'll see.

Fans, bigger slower fans.

I remember test miner S9, unbearable sound.

Replaced fans with bigger ones (Noctua known for being more silent) and you don't even realize it is running.

This should be reproducible on big scale.

No less important though is to get neighbors some benefit 🤷‍♂️ find some way to reuse the heat for benefit of neighbors (preferably without noise)

Quieter fans or set up in commercial or industrial parks

What about immersion mining? I’ve heard it’s very quiet. I’m sure more expensive to set up though. Maybe a good option for those really close to houses.

Thanks, i''ll look into that.

I bet Riot mining has some videos on how loud it will be. I’d assume it’s not bad, just computer fans?

I havent been close to it, but its something that came up last nite at the community meeting. The closest neighbors said the noise was disruptive.
