I think Wikipedia is hoping to convince you to send them enough money to make the ads stop. Classic negative reinforcement.

This angle has been on my mind for a long time, especially when it comes to laws and regulations. There should be a dictionary snapshot to accompany legislative bills and agency regulations.

Make it free free or just a pay wall. Begging for money with banners is annoying. Same goes for Mozilla.

Perhaps if they added a bitcoin/ethereum/lightning address under a "donation" label some corner of the page, would be more compelling and successful than the banner.

When I realized what my donations went towards 🤬😡🤬😡
even if you donate you still get the popups. Same with archive.org and 1000s of other paywall sites. Same with cable tv. Same with anywhere you have ads. Bitcoin will inexorably remove them from the equation.
